Google Fights Back with AI-Powered Search Tools Codenamed "Magi"

Google plans to launch new AI-powered search tools next month in response to the growing competition from Microsoft's Bing chatbot and OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to The New York Times. The upcoming features, which remain under wraps, will initially be available exclusively in the US to a maximum of one million users. Developed under the codename "Magi," the tools are expected to build on the conversational capabilities of Google's experimental Bard chatbot.

The move comes as Google's dominance is being challenged, with Samsung reportedly considering replacing Google with Bing as the default search engine on its mobile devices—a deal worth an estimated $3 billion in annual revenue. Besides project Magi, Google is working on a more radical rebuild of its search engine and developing other AI tools, such as the AI image generator GIFI, the language learning system Tivoli Tutor, and Searchalong, a feature that integrates a chatbot into Google's Chrome browser.
